is a baker with a designer's flare.
When she and her mother decided to open Sugar Hoot Bake Shop at 57 Bank St., in New Milford, Kristyn Mase said she used her design training from in Boston to lay out the floor plan for the shop.
"I was thinking about doing this even before my friend gave me the gift of a threesession Wilton Cake Decorating class," Mase said. "Baking wasn't something I was brought up on."
Growing up in an Italian family, she said: "My cooking was more in the line of pastas and tomato sauces. But once I started baking, that was it."
Mase began making cakes from her Sherman home for friends and family. Then, with a move to New York City, she completed the pastry program at the .
"I had just sold my Shell gas station in Brookfield and was retired five months," said her mother, Carol Mase. "Kristyn and I had been talking about a bakery while she was in school. It was definitely her idea. It was a dream of hers and I decided I wanted to help her make it come true."
A customer often will come in with a theme for a specialty cake, and she will "draw up a sketch of possibilities."
Sugar Hoot cakes have included "a Victorian hand mirror with a game of jacks on the side; the design had special meaning to the customer," Mase said. A "themed" wedding cake and a cake designed as "an alligator eating a salad" are all in a day's baking.
said she was introduced to Mase's talents when her husband ordered a cake designed as a purse.
"Louis Vuitton is my favorite designer," Phillips said. "Kristyn's services are just incredible, not just for the looks of the cakes the taste is incredible, too."
Phillips since has ordered a birthday cake with the image of the latest album by her niece's favorite rock band Paramore on it, and a cake that looked like a guitar for her daughter's 13th birthday. |
